FINAL PROJECT - VISUAL ANALYSIS.

In Week 05, I watched  the lecture video which is

  • Lec 7 Visual Analysis

According to the module assignment briefs, I have to pick one goal from UNSDG and choose an artwork that focuses on the goal that I chose. Give an explanation of my choice and how it relates to the UNSDG in around 50 words. And also create a visual analysis of the chosen design in 300–350 words.

After that, create my own design that is response to the one I have studied. And write 50-100 words to explain and support the decision I made when creating my design.

1. RECAP LECTURE NOTES.

Visual analysis is a way of comprehending design that focuses on visual elements and principles. The goal of visual analysis is to better comprehend the decisions made by the designer when producing the design, as well as to better comprehend how the formal properties of a design communicate ideas, content, or meaning. Visual analysis is an important component of visual literacy, a skill that helps people read and critically interpret images.

VISUAL ANALYSIS

This is the artwork that I chose, "In Too Deep" by Rachael Amber. I chose this artwork as I want to focus on the issue of life under the water such as in coral reefs. This artwork is showing the situation of life under the water which is the coral reefs dying and bleaching. The beauty of the poster attracted people's attention and perfectly told the reality behind it.

OBSERVATION

The poster is in portrait format. For the visual elements, the main colors used in this design work are blue, white, grey and black which create a cool-tone color palette. Beside that, curved and organic lines are used throughout the design. A fishing boat at the top of the design. And also there are words at the top and bottom left of the design. A human hand is at the center and surrounded by coral reefs and a school of fish.

ANALYSIS

This design is asymmetrical balance. The emphasis is on the center of the design, the human hand, rendered in black color which presents a strong contrast compared to the background. The water waves at the fingertip create movement. Besides, the words at the top follow the flow of the ocean which lead the viewer to read from left to right. There is a repetition of fish and coral reefs from the middle to the bottom of the design. The use of white, grey, black and blue color create contrast throughout the design. This design also applied the design principle of hierarchy as the viewers see the bigger human hand at first and followed by the smaller words.

INTERPRETATION

This is an environmental awareness poster designed to raise people's awareness on environmental issues. the design expresses the bleaching and dying of coral reefs as the rising ocean temperature. Besides, the increase in acidification, fossil fuel like CO2, chemicals and etc adds to the depletion of species. To raise people's awareness about these harsh environmental changes that make ocean organisms difficult to live. This poster was designed to let people look at it and think about it before leaving with a sense of what is going on. It also reminds people about one ecosystem in danger means all ecosystems are in danger, everything is connected.

 2. DESIGN PROCESS.

2.1 VISUAL REFERENCES.

The goal that I picked from United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals is Goal 14, Life Below Water. I chose to focus on the effect of sunscreen/sunblock on coral reefs. This is because I think there are few people who pay attention to and take action on this issue. However, this little-known problem had caused the death of coral and coral bleaching. I hope to create an artwork that can raise people's awareness on this issue and avoid using toxic sunscreen when going out into the ocean.

Below are the designs that inspired me.

2.2 IDEA EXPLORATION.

I got some inspiration from Pinterest and Ke Alaka'i as above (Figure 2.1). I plan to create an artwork in a layered papercut style and shows the color changing of coral reefs after being polluted by toxic sunscreen.

Figure 2.2 Sketch.

To make the layered papercut style, I used different colors for different layers. The toxic sunscreen is placed on the top left and the sunscreen liquid flows out and is slowly mixed with the seawater. I use different layers to show the color change of the coral reefs. The healthy and colorful coral reefs in the foreground, the coral reefs that start losing color and bleaching in the middle ground and the bleached coral in the background.

Figure 2.3 First design.

This is my first design outcome according to the ideas in my sketch (Figure 2.2). I added more coral so that the color change is more obvious. Besides, I redrew the curve of the ocean and added more details on the bottle of toxic sunscreen and the sunscreen liquid that mixed with seawater.

After receiving feedback from Dr. Charles Sharma Naidu Achu Naidu on my first design (Figure 2.3), he suggested me to add more coral reefs, change some information that on the toxic sunscreen bottle and improve the flow of sunscreen liquid.

2.3 FINAL OUTCOME.

Figure 3 Final outcome // Colorless Future.

This is my final outcome for Goal 14: Life Below Water (UNSDG). I added more coral reefs in either foreground, middle ground or background so that it is more focused on coral reefs. I added dead coral too in the background so that it shows how the coral reefs will after bleaching. I did redraw the flow of the sunscreen liquid so that it seem more realistic and natural. I enlarged the symbol of toxic on the sunscreen bottle and rearranged the position of all messages on it.

I named this design as Colorless Future. This is due to the reason that if humans keep ignoring and do not take action on this issue it will make all coral reefs bleach and lose their color. The New York Times reports that "an estimated 14,000 tonnes of sunscreen is believed to be deposited in oceans each year". People should aware of this issue and avoid using toxic products that damaged marine life.

2.4 LECTURER'S FEEDBACK.

On week 7, I showed my first design (Figure 2.3) to Dr. Charles Sharma Naidu Achu Naidu. He said that the idea to focus on coral reefs is great but also suggested me to improve some areas.
He suggested me to add more coral reefs so that it's more focused on coral reefs. The color change of coral reefs can be enhanced and even can add some dead coral between them. Besides, improve the flow of sunscreen liquid as it's a little bit weird now. In addition, he suggested me to reduce the message on the sunscreen bottle and just show the toxic symbol.

3. REFLECTION.

This is the last project of the module Design Principle. After watching the lesson video, I feel a bit stressed and have no direction on what to do as it has a few tasks have to complete. I try to understand what is UNSDG and also chose one of the goals to focus on. I remember that I heard before the issue about sunscreen causing negative impact on coral reefs but I think that few people know about this issue. After some research, I decided to focus on this issue. There are very few articles or artwork about this issue. After I found an artwork that is related to my UNSDG and also the topic I decided to focus on, I start doing visual analysis of that artwork. It was a new experience for me as I never did any visual analysis before. I learn a lot from the process of doing visual analysis as it can help to understand what is included in the artwork such as design principles and design elements. Visual analysis helps me to understand the meaning of the artwork too.

After visual analysis, I start to sketch my ideas based on the visual research. I did the first design after my sketch was done. I spend a lot of time on the first design outcome to reach my expectation. In week 7, I did some improvements and changes to my first design after I get some valuable feedback from Dr. Charles Sharma Naidu Achu Naidu. Through this project, I learned the way to do visual analysis which help me in understanding how others apply the design elements and design principles in their artwork and also the way to use artwork to represent the meaning behind it.
