Project 01- Exercise 1: Vormator character
In Project 01, our task is to design and create a unique character
using a specific set of shapes provided by Mr. Hafiz. We will need to
trace the shapes given using Adobe Illustrator. There were a few rules
that we needed to adhere to throughout the process. We can rotate,
flip, duplicate the shapes and scale the size of the shapes. We were
not required to use all the shapes provided. However, outline strokes
were not permitted, and there should be no background included in the
final character design. Additionally, the character had to fit within
the dimensions of 600px x 600px.

Progress
I followed step-by-step of the demonstration presented by Mr. Hafiz
during the class. Utilizing the shape tools, shape builder, and
pathfinder in Adobe Illustrator, I traced the set of shapes
provided. To ensure ease of recognition, I used distinct colors for
each shape.

Once I completed tracing the set of shapes, I embarked on creating a
character with the concept of a fairy in the forest. However, I felt
dissatisfied with the outcome of my design.

|
Due to the failure on the first attempt, I realize the importance of
sketching out my ideas before diving into the character creation
process using Adobe Illustrator. To gather inspiration, I referred to
visual references available on Pinterest. Taking these references into
account, I began sketching out my expectations for the character,
aiming to have a clearer direction for the design.

I proceeded by creating the desired shape for the character's body and
then designing several elements for the character. Attempting to capture
the essence of a forest fairy, I tried incorporating wings into the
design. Unfortunately, the initial outcome did not meet my expectations.
I continued to experiment and design additional clothing options for the
character. Eventually, after multiple adjustments, I achieved three
outcomes that met my expectations.

In Week 3, we learned about color, gradients, patterns, and textures.
With this newfound knowledge, I try to apply these concepts to my
character design. After consideration, I selected the fourth attempt
character as my final choice. I found that this particular design struck a
balance, as it was not overly complex while still embodying the essence of
a fairy in a forest setting.

Project 01- Exercise 2: Illustrated typography
In Exercise 02, our task focused on further mastering Adobe Illustrator. We are assigned to design and create an illustrated typography. To begin, we utilized the Pictionary Generator website to generate a word. Ensure that the illustration and the chosen word complemented each other harmoniously. Additionally, we adhered to an artboard size of 800px x 600px throughout the design process.
Progress
I generated several words using the Pictionary Generator website and shared them with Mr. Hafiz for his feedback. He advised me to select the words that were more interesting, as this would make the combination of the chosen words even more captivating to observe.
After considering various options, I decided to illustrate the typography for the words 'cactus' and 'lipstick'. These words presented a contrasting combination that I believed would yield an engaging and visually appealing result.

In my initial attempt to illustrate the words 'cactus' and 'lipstick', I chose to separate the words and utilize their individual letterforms to shape corresponding objects. Additionally, I explored incorporating a 3D effect, as instructed by Mr. Hafiz. However, upon presenting my outcome to Mr. Hafiz, he provided valuable feedback, suggesting that I explore more creative ways to combine both words in my typography design.

Sketch
Based on the feedback provided by Mr. Hafiz, I took the opportunity to revise my illustrated typography. This time, I try creating individual cactus-shaped letters for the word 'cactus'. Each letter was uniquely designed to resemble a cactus. Subsequently, I explored incorporating the word 'lipstick' as the mouths of these cacti. The flowers of the cacti served as the lipsticks, with the cacti playfully coloring their mouths using these flowers. This concept allowed for a more creative and visually engaging combination of the two words in my typography design.

Based on the sketches I had done, I made the decision to proceed with Idea 2 for my illustrated typography. With this in mind, I turned to Adobe Illustrator to bring my concept and translate it into a digital format.

Reflective Writing.
During this project, I feel stressed since it was my first time
using Adobe Illustrator. I spend extra time exploring and
familiarizing myself with Adobe Illustrator's features and
functionalities. However, I faced a minor setback due to an
issue with my student account, which I can't access the Adobe
app. Despite this obstacle, I reached out to the relevant
department and, after approximately a week, my request was
approved, allowing me to proceed with the project.
Through this project, I acquired essential knowledge about the
basic steps and tools required to navigate Adobe Illustrator
effectively. Besides, I also learned how to incorporate texture
and patterns into my artwork, enabling me to add depth and
enhance the layering effect of my compositions.
Overall, despite the initial challenges, I gained valuable
skills and insights from this project. It served as a platform
for me to develop proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, understand
its features more thoroughly, and employ various techniques to
elevate the quality of my artwork.
