LECTURES
Week 01 /
During the first week of class, Mr. Martin provided an overview of the module and introduced us to the assignment. We learned that this module covers the entire filmmaking process, including pre-production, production, and post-production, which includes preparation, principle shooting, and editing.
For our final project, we were grouped into pairs to create either a 60-second stop motion animation or individual 30-second stop motion animations. As part of our preparation, we were tasked with watching stop-motion shorts at home and selecting three of them. We had to explain why we chose each short, helping us gain a deeper understanding of the genre.

Week 02 /
In week 02, we explored the distinctions between early cinema and contemporary TV commercials. We also delved into the concept of shot size, which determines the area visible within the frame, including extreme wide shots, wide shots, medium wide shots, medium shots, medium close-ups, close-ups, over-the-shoulder shots, and extreme close-ups.
We learned how to position characters and objects according to each shot size and the storytelling objectives behind using them in movies. Additionally, we studied camera angles such as the rule of thirds, camera height, eye-level angles, low-angle shots, and high-angle shots. We also covered screen direction and the 180-degree rule to maintain visual continuity in filmmaking.

Figure 1.2.1 Lecture slides week 02.

Mr. Martin assigned us the task of recording our voices using our smartphones at home to match the muted video provided in the slides. Additionally, we were required to create a spreadsheet listing all the necessary sound effects for each scene at specific times in the video. In the upcoming week, Mr. Martin will instruct us on how to use the pitch shifter feature in Adobe Premiere Pro for our Project 01 Audio dubbing.

Week 03 /
In week 03 of our class, we delved into the concept of storytelling in film. We were introduced to the three-act structure, which includes Act 1 (beginning/setup) introduces the world, main characters, and establishes the dramatic situation. Act 1 leads to an incident that complicates the story, known as plot point 1. Act 2 (middle/confrontation), also referred to as the "rising action," is focused on developing obstacles and complications that lead to the climax of the story, known as plot point 2. Act 3 (end/resolution) concludes the story, resolving the climax and addressing all obstacles.

Figure 1.3.1 Lecture slides week 03.

Additionally, we explored the elements of film sound, including speech, sound effects, and music. We gained an understanding of how each of these elements functions within a video or film.

Figure 1.3.2 Lecture slides week 03.

Week 04 /
In week 4 class, we delved into the concept of Mise En Scène, which involves setting the stage for a film. Mise En Scène encompasses various elements, including composition, set design, lighting, costume and props, and depth of space, all of which play a crucial role in creating the visual and aesthetic aspects of a film.

Figure 1.4.1 Lecture slides week 04.

After that, we divided into two teams for Project 2A shooting. Each team was assigned to shoot specific scenes with provided storyboards. While we were expected to follow the given storyboard, the dialogue for the scenes was to be suggested by our respective team directors. We had a 30-minute group discussion to plan our approach and assign specific roles to each team member for the upcoming shooting practice. This involved organizing a crew list to ensure that everyone had a defined role and responsibilities during the shoot.

Figure 1.4.2 Project 2A slides week 04.

Additionally, we were tasked with completing the idea development for Project 2B, which was a self-titled video project. This required us to brainstorm ideas for the video and then compile the information into the provided slide template.

Week 05 /
During Week 05, we had our group shooting practice in the studio. I was in Team B, shooting the movie 'Beef,' and my role was assistant director. I helped track the shooting progress, checked on the cast and crew, and maintained order on the set.

Afterward, we were tasked with downloading the footage and audio provided by our group producer and editing a draft with synchronized dialogue.

Week 06 /
In this week, Mr. Martin taught us about using Adobe Premiere Pro to do color correction. Color correction is important to match the color temperature of multiple shots to a consistent technical standard of appearance.

We also learned some tips for making Insta/TikTok videos for our Project 2B. We learned ways to make framing more creative, camera movements, transitions, and more.

Week 07 /
During week 7, we learned about audio editing and sound shaping with EQ. We explored the frequency range and dynamic range of sound, as well as the concept of space.

Figure 1.7.1 Lecture slides week 07.

Week 09 /
During week 9, we were briefed about our final project, which is stop motion. We learned about the steps involved in creating a stop-motion video. This provided us with more direction when shooting stop motion ourselves.

Week 10 /
During week 10, we learned about VFX during this week. In class, we practiced VFX skills using the footage provided by Mr. Martin. These VFX skills will be beneficial for enhancing our stop motion project later on.

INSTRUCTIONS

Week 01
Exercise 01/ Smint
We had hands-on experience with the Adobe Premiere Pro editing software during in-class exercises. In the first exercise, we were provided with advertisement footage, which we had to download and import into Adobe Premiere Pro. Our task was to arrange the shots in the correct order on the timeline and export the video.

Exercise 02/ Doritos
The second exercise involved working with footage that was not in the correct order, requiring us to carefully watch each clip and rearrange them to create a properly ordered advertisement on the timeline.

Preparation for Final Project
For the final project, I collaborated with Gam Jze Shin to create a 60-second stop-motion animation. To streamline our communication and collaboration, we utilized Canva slides. We selected three stop-motion shorts and provided descriptions for each to help us in the decision-making process.

Week 02
Exercise 03/ Shooting Exercise
To apply the knowledge that we learned during the lecture, we engaged in group exercises, capturing shots on campus and adding captions using Adobe Premiere Pro.

Figure 2.4.1 Shooting exercise.

I collaborated with Gam Jze Shin for this shooting exercise, with her taking on the role of the actor while I was responsible for capturing the shots according to the shot sizes specified by Mr. Martin. We scouted various locations around our class to determine the most suitable settings for each shot in the video.

Exercise 04/ Editing Exercise - Lalin
Additionally, we were assigned editing exercises to complete at home. Mr. Martin provided two storyboards, and we could choose one of them to edit into a 35-second video. We downloaded the provided footage from Google Drive, identified which clips were needed for the selected storyboard, and then imported them into Adobe Premiere Pro. Our task was to trim any unnecessary parts, compile the footage with graphics and music, and ensure the final video was precisely 35 seconds long.

Week 03
Exercise 05/ 3 Act Structure
To apply the knowledge we had learned, we analyzed the movie "Lalin" (2005) to understand how the three-act structure functions in a film. We were then tasked with completing the three-act structure exercise for the movie "Guang" (2011) using a provided template.

Week 07
Exercise 06/ Sound Shaping
In this week, we learned how to use Adobe Audition to apply different effects to sound. We downloaded a provided sound source and used it to practice sound shaping.

Week 09
Exercise 07/ Stop Motion
We learned how to use Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects to edit and combine the photos we shot for the stop-motion video.

REFLECTIONS
Before starting this module, I had no prior experience in video and audio editing. Throughout the course of completing this module, I acquired a wealth of knowledge and skills in video shooting, editing, and audio editing. Despite being enjoyable and fun, these exercises were instrumental in imparting valuable skills and knowledge.
