Project 1: Mobile Application Proposal
For this
project, our task is to identify the unsatisfactory user interface
and user experience design of application, thoroughly analyze its
strengths and weaknesses, and propose comprehensive redesign
solutions.
Progress
Following the briefing provided by the
lecturer, I initiated the project by conducting research on the
applications installed on my smartphone. I systematically reviewed
each application, identifying those that could benefit from
improvements in UI/UX design.
To supplement my own observations, I also consulted the ratings and reviews of these applications on the Apple App Store, gaining insights from other users. Subsequently, I compiled a list of weaknesses observed in each application.
Next, I commenced the creation of Canva slides and delved into researching the categories, descriptions, and target audiences of the selected applications. This additional information provided context and a deeper understanding of each app.
To facilitate the discussion of weaknesses, I captured screenshots of relevant pages within the applications. This visual aid enabled clearer articulation of the identified shortcomings.
After outlining the weaknesses, I proposed redesign solutions tailored to address each specific issue.

In addition to analyzing individual applications, I conducted a competitive analysis of competitor apps. This allowed me to benchmark user interface elements and user experience features against industry standards, aiding in the development of more effective redesign solutions.
During week 02 class, I presented my proposal draft to lecturer. Lecturer suggested incorporating arrows or circles on the application pages to highlight the areas where I was pointing out weaknesses. This visual enhancement would make it easier for viewers to understand the specific aspects under discussion. Additionally, lecturer advised me to consider the ratings and reviews on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, ensuring that the redesign proposals are not solely based on my personal opinions. Furthermore, lecturer instructed me to select one application from the three candidates and proceed with developing the final proposal based on the redesign solutions.
Final Proposal Draft

I proceeded with finalizing the proposal, opting to focus on MyUMobile as my ultimate choice. Initially, I had considered redesigning the LoudSpeaker app, but Mr. Zeon suggested that several others were also proposing to redesign it. Given this, he recommended exploring applications like Maxis or Umobile, which had fewer proposals for improvement.
Since this was my first time creating a proposal for a redesigned application, I sought guidance online on how to articulate the purpose of the proposal and reviewed examples of senior work provided by Mr. Zeon.
Subsequently, I searched online for demographic information specific to the MyUMobile application but was unable to find any. However, I found demographic data for the UMobile website and decided to include it temporarily, intending to confirm its suitability with Mr. Zeon later.

During week 03, I presented the proposal to Mr. Zeon to solicit feedback on areas for improvement. However, since I had not completed it yet, he provided minimal feedback. Regarding the demographic information, he suggested that while having demographic data specific to the application would be ideal, using data from the website was also acceptable if necessary.
Then, I continue with completing the proposal. For user requirements, I summarized data from the ratings on app stores and play stores. To ensure accuracy, I researched how to formulate primary and secondary goals and delved into various user research and testing methods online to determine the most suitable approach for the chosen application.
In week 4, we had our initial presentation where we discussed the mobile application proposal we had developed. I prepared a script and finalized the proposal beforehand. Following the presentation, Mr. Zeon recommended that I integrate the redesign solutions into the slides, similar to what was included in the proposal draft. He found the rest of the presentation satisfactory.

In response to the feedback, I polished my proposal further. I incorporated the redesign solutions into my slides, aligning them with each identified weakness. Additionally, I included some additional slides after listening to the proposals presented by others, based on feedback provided by Mr. Zeon.

Week 02
Mr. Zeon suggested incorporating arrows or circles on the application pages to highlight the areas where I was pointing out weaknesses. This visual enhancement would make it easier for viewers to understand the specific aspects under discussion. Additionally, he advised me to consider the ratings and reviews on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, ensuring that the redesign proposals are not solely based on my personal opinions. Furthermore, Mr. Zeon instructed me to select one application from the three candidates and proceed with developing the final proposal based on the redesign solutions.
Week 03
Since I had not completed it yet, he provided minimal feedback. Regarding the demographic information, he suggested that while having demographic data specific to the application would be ideal, using data from the website was also acceptable if necessary. Instead of merely inserting screenshots, it would be more effective to summarize the ratings obtained from both the app store and the play store into a concise paragraph.
Week 04
Mr. Zeon recommended that I integrate the redesign solutions into the slides, similar to what was included in the proposal draft. He found the rest of the presentation satisfactory.
Experience
At the beginning of this project, I initially felt a bit directionless, as I perceived most of the applications I regularly use to have effective UI/UX designs. However, upon delving into user ratings and comments, I discovered that some application designs may suffer from clutter and lack user-friendliness. Mr. Zeon's patient feedback and suggestions guided me in the right direction. Presenting in front of my classmates and Mr. Zeon made me quite nervous, indicating that I need more practice in presentation skills.
Observation
I've come to realize that crafting a user-friendly application design can pose challenges. The design must align with the application's goals and cater to its target audience and brand. Even big brands can make common mistakes in their applications. Therefore, I've recognized the importance of conducting user testing post-design to refine the application based on user feedback.
Findings
Creating a user-centered design requires extensive research. Designers must empathize with users to design an application that meets their satisfaction.
