REFLECTIONS
Experience
At the beginning of this module, I felt a sense of difficulty. Writing has never been my strong suit, so completing a research project seemed like a daunting challenge. However, Dr. Charles was incredibly patient in guiding us onto the right track. I always showed him my written content, and he consistently pointed out ways to refine and improve it. Writing a dissertation in my own words was particularly challenging due to my limited proficiency in English and frequent grammatical mistakes. To overcome this, I read and observed the writing styles in various journals and articles to learn from them.
When it came to the visual design publication, transforming my draft dissertation into an eBook, I struggled for a long time. The topic of my dissertation, storytelling techniques, lacked specific graphic elements to clearly represent storytelling. After researching on Pinterest, I was inspired to use rounded rectangles, reminiscent of button shapes, throughout the design. These shapes also resembled conversation bubbles, symbolizing storytelling. To ensure each page looked interesting and unique, I spent a significant amount of time arranging text placement and graphic elements.
Observation
I realized that I lacked knowledge and exposure to published journals and articles. Previously, I would only seek visual design ideas from the internet, using platforms like Pinterest, Behance and etc. However, through this module, I recognized the importance of designers reading and researching design. While Pinterest provides inspiration for creating designs, it does not offer a deep understanding of design principles or insights into how design can enhance user experience or build emotional connections. Research enables us to better understand user needs and improve our designs not only visually but also functionally and emotionally.
Findings
I discovered that design is not solely about visual aesthetics. It also requires research to gain a deeper understanding of its meaning, function, and effectiveness for the user. Research helps us comprehend the impact of design and the important principles behind it. It is a process that cannot be completed in a day or two. It requires time to understand the topic, define the research objectives, and ensure the data gathered is accurate and substantial. Findings should be supported by data rather than personal opinions to ensure they reflect public response and are credible.
