REFLECTIONS
My initial thoughts and expectations about Design Communication were that I would learn to draw simple perspective drawings, sketching, and orthographic projections. I chose this module as a free elective based on a friend’s recommendation. She had taken the Design Communication module for Interior Architecture. However, after a few weeks, I realized I had selected the wrong module, as Taylor’s offers two modules with the same name, one for Architecture and one for Interior Architecture. Despite this mistake, I decided to continue because I had taken "Grafik Komunikasi Teknikal (GKT)" during SPM, where I learned basic architectural drawing skills such as perspective and orthographic drawings. Although I initially wanted to pursue Architecture after SPM, I ended up choosing Creative Media Design for several reasons.
With some fear and pressure from taking the wrong module and having no friends in this class, I still continued. Throughout the module, I learned new skills in drawing and using tools. In GKT during SPM, we were required to use a drawing board with a built-in parallel ruler, making it easy to lock paper in place. In this module, I discovered I could achieve the same effect using the table’s edge and a T-square. Initially, I struggled to align and tape the paper straight, but I figured it out eventually. I also learned how to use a scale ruler to measure dimensions and draw accurately, as well as shading techniques with marker pens to add shadows and make drawings look more realistic. Additionally, I improved my sketching and hatching skills, which I hadn’t practiced much since my foundation year.
This module taught me a lot, but it also came with challenges. One major challenge was positioning the drawing paper. Since my table couldn’t fit the large A3 paper, I often ended up with tilted lines. To solve this, I adjusted my tools and workspace to fit better. Another challenge was completing Assessments 02 and 03, which involved multiple detailed drawings. As I am not an Architecture student, I struggled with parts like drawing stairs and furniture. The incomplete measurements in the instructions also confused me. To overcome these difficulties, I asked my classmates and friends for guidance, these helped me complete the presentation board which something that felt impossible at the start of the semester.
Personally, I have always liked Architecture, especially building designs and interiors. The skills I learned in this module can be applied to my leisure drawing or self-study. I plan to review architectural drawings and practice designing my own concepts. This semester, I also took a Computer Applications module, where I learned to use Revit and 3ds Max to create 3D architectural models. Combining these skills, I hope to use my free time to create architectural designs, which might also be helpful for internships or freelance opportunities in the future. This module was a mix of pain and happiness. I absolutely loved seeing the final drawing outcomes that I successfully completed, but the process of getting there was incredibly challenging and exhausting.
